Upon returning to Buffalo in the mid-1970s, Fahey explored various career paths, including sales and fitness. It was during this time that he discovered his passion for the stage. In the mid-1980s, a tragic accident in London abruptly ended Fahey's promising ballet career. However, his love for the arts remained strong. He founded a production company, producing off-Broadway plays and, later, films. After a 27-year hiatus, Fahey returned to the stage in Los Angeles and performed in London's "Twelve Angry Men" and "The Best Man."

After recovering from his injury, Fahey transitioned to film, making his debut in the soap opera "One Life to Live." His breakout role came in the 1985 Western "Silverado." However, it was his portrayal of Job in the 1992 sci-fi thriller "The Lawnmower Man" that earned him critical acclaim.
