Biography of Jack Teagarden

Jack Teagarden was an American jazz musician, known for his skills as a trombonist and vocalist. He was born into a Dutch-Indian family and was raised in a musical household, with his mother being a pianist and all of his siblings being musicians.

Early Life and Career

Teagarden initially learned to play the piano and began mastering the trombone at the age of seven. By 1922, at a young age, he was already leading an orchestra in Kansas City. In 1927, he moved to New York and made his first recordings as a trombonist and vocalist with Eddie Condon's group, with his most famous recording being "Makin' Friends".

From 1928 to 1933, Teagarden worked with Ben Pollack's orchestra and recorded records with Red Nichols, Benny Goodman, Fats Waller, Joe Venuti, and many others. In 1929, he collaborated with Louis Armstrong on the popular hit "Knockin' A Jug". He later played in Paul Whiteman's orchestra from 1934 to 1938, gaining a reputation as the best trombonist through regular radio appearances.

Career Highlights

In the 1940s, Teagarden formed his own bands several times but did not achieve commercial success. He gained national fame when he joined Louis Armstrong's group from 1947 to 1951 and appeared with Bing Crosby in the film "The Birth of the Blues" in 1951. Afterward, he was able to establish and maintain his own sextet, with which he toured the Middle East on behalf of the US Department of State in 1956.

Teagarden performed with Armstrong at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958, which was captured in the film "Jazz on a Summer's Day". As a vocalist, he recorded several hits including "I'm Coming Virginia," "Aunt Hagar's Blues," "The Sheik Of Araby," "Stars Fell On Alabama," and "Basin Street Blues".
