Biography of Jennifer Botterill
IntroductionJennifer Botterill is a former Canadian ice hockey player who is widely recognized as a legend in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Born in Ottawa, Ontario, she is the daughter of Doreen McCannell, a two-time Olympic figure skater. Botterill had a successful career in ice hockey, winning numerous international awards and representing the Canadian national team.
Early Life and Education
Jennifer Botterill was born in Ottawa, Ontario, but she considers Winnipeg, Manitoba, her hometown. Coming from a family of athletes, her mother represented Canada in Olympic figure skating in 1964 and 1968. Botterill attended Harvard University from 1998 to 2003, where she played for the women's ice hockey team. She achieved a remarkable record during her college years, accumulating 319 points, including 149 goals and 170 assists.
Ice Hockey Career
While Botterill's record-breaking statistics were accomplished before women's ice hockey became an officially recognized NCAA sport, her performance on the ice was exceptional. She played a total of 107 games, scoring at least one point in 106 of them. Her only scoreless game broke her streak of 80 consecutive games with a point. On January 28, 2003, Botterill set a record in NCAA for the most points in a single game, scoring 10 points against Boston College.
Botterill also played in the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) for the Mississauga Chiefs and Toronto Furies. In the 2007-2008 season, she earned the Angela James Cup, setting a league record with 61 points. She received several prestigious awards, including Best Forward and monthly awards for the most points. In the 2008-2009 season, she was selected for the league's All-Star team.
International Achievements
Jennifer Botterill made her Olympic debut in 1998 at the Nagano Winter Olympics, where she won a silver medal with the Canadian team. She went on to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in 2002, 2006, and 2010. Her final game with the Canadian national team was in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, where she recorded an assist that led to the game-winning goal by Marie-Philip Poulin.
In addition to her Olympic success, Botterill also excelled in the World Championships. Throughout her career, she won a total of 8 medals, including 5 gold medals in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, and 2007, and 3 silver medals in 2005, 2008, and 2009.
Retirement
After the 2010-2011 season, Jennifer Botterill officially retired from professional ice hockey. Despite playing only three seasons in the relatively young CWHL, she ranked second in the all-time scoring list with 160 points in 79 games. She was also a three-time nominee for the Angela James Cup but finished in third place both times.
