Childhood and Early CareerJeong Do-yeon was born in Seoul on February 11, 1973. She earned a degree in broadcasting from Seoul Institute of the Arts. Prior to acting, Jeong worked as a print model and appeared in commercials for Johnson & Johnson.
Breakthrough and Critical Acclaim
Jeong made her acting debut in 1992 with a minor role in the TV series "Our Paradise." She gained recognition in 1997 for her leading role in "The Contact," which became the second-highest-grossing film of that year. Jeong continued to portray diverse characters, from a schoolgirl in love to a prostitute with HIV.
International Success
Jeong achieved international acclaim in 2007 for her performance in "Secret Sunshine." For her role as Shin Ae, she became the first Korean actress to win the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival. Despite her success in South Korea, Jeong declined offers for foreign films due to language barriers.
"The Handmaiden" and Cannes
Jeong's next major work was the erotic thriller "The Handmaiden" (2016), a remake of a 1960 cult classic. The film features numerous nude scenes, in which Jeong chose not to conceal her real scars. "The Handmaiden" was nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes, but Jeong remained unfazed by the festival's prestige.
"The Shameless" and Beyond
In 2015, Jeong walked the red carpet at Cannes again for "The Shameless," a crime thriller exploring the complex relationship between a police officer and a murder suspect's mistress. Her subsequent notable project was the disaster film "Emergency Declaration" (2022).
Personal Life
Jeong is married to race car owner Kang Shi-gyu. They met in 2006 and married in 2007. The couple has a daughter who was born in 2009.
