Biography of Jeremy Abbott

Jeremy Abbott is an American figure skater who competes in the discipline of men's singles. He was born on June 5, 1985, in Aspen, Colorado. Abbott began ice skating at the age of two and started participating in children's competitions by the age of four.

Early Life and Education

Abbott attended high school for an extra year in order to focus on his figure skating career while maintaining good grades. He graduated from high school in 2004. Interestingly, his older sister, Gwen Abbott, is a speed skier who competed in the Winter Olympics in Turin.

Multidisciplinary Skater

One notable aspect of Abbott's career is his experience in all three disciplines of figure skating. He has competed in ice dancing with partners Amanda Cunningham (1995-1995) and Kati Hoffmaster (1997-1998), in pair skating with Britani Weiss (1998-1999) and Crystal Sorenson (2001-2002). In 1999, Abbott moved from his hometown of Aspen to Colorado Springs to train with Tom Zakrajsek, with whom he continues to work.

Competitive Career

Abbott began participating in competitions as a singles skater in the 2001-2002 season at the junior level. In 2005, he won the U.S. Junior National Championship. In 2007, he placed fourth at the senior U.S. Championships and did not qualify for major international events. However, when Johnny Weir withdrew from the Four Continents Championships, Abbott was selected to compete and placed third.

In the 2008-2009 season, Abbott placed fourth at the Cup of Russia and unexpectedly won the Cup of China, achieving his personal best scores in both the short and free skate. As a result, he qualified for the Grand Prix Final for the first time in his career and ultimately won the event.
