She made her acting debut on the stage of the Metropolitan Music Hall, where she performed in the popular musical "Bluebell in Fairyland," directed by Seymour Hicks and featuring music by Charles Taylor. Following several unsuccessful pregnancies, Jessie and Sonnie adopted a daughter named Catherine. Her third marriage was to military officer Brian Lewis from 1945 to 1959. Jessie Matthews passed away on August 19, 1981, in Eastcote, Middlesex, England, after battling cancer. Initially, she was buried in an unmarked grave, but in the late 1980s, she was reinterred with honors, recognizing her contributions to the entertainment industry.
