Early Life and Boxing CareerJoe Frazier was born in South Carolina, USA. Initially interested in gymnastics, he later transitioned to boxing and became one of the top amateur heavyweights in the United States.
Olympic Glory
Despite losing to Buster Mathis in the qualifying match, Frazier stepped in for Mathis when he suffered a hand injury. The American went on to win the gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, defeating German Hans Huber in the final.
Professional Debut and Early Success
In 1965, Frazier turned professional under the guidance of Yank Durham. Known for his aggressive style and signature left hook, he won 11 consecutive fights before facing the formidable Oscar Bonavena in 1966. Despite being knocked down twice, Frazier rallied to win the 10-round bout on points.
New York State Heavyweight Championship
Following his victory over Bonavena, Frazier continued his winning streak, defeating notable opponents such as Eddie Machen, Doug Jones, and George Chuvalo. In 1968, he emerged victorious in the New York State Heavyweight Championship tournament, defeating his former amateur rival Buster Mathis in the final.
Undisputed Heavyweight Champion
In 1970, Frazier defeated Jimmy Ellis in the fifth round to become the undisputed World Heavyweight Champion. However, his reign was short-lived.
Muhammad Ali Rivalry
In 1971, Muhammad Ali was reinstated after being banned from boxing. A highly anticipated bout between Frazier and Ali dubbed the "Fight of the Century" took place in 1971. Despite the hype, Frazier shocked the world and defeated Ali, handing him his first professional loss.
Loss to George Foreman
In 1973, Frazier faced George Foreman, a formidable opponent who would later become a pastor. Despite his confidence, Frazier was brutally knocked out in the second round, effectively ending his reign as champion.
Decline and Retirement
