Early Life and Military Service

Birth and Childhood

On September 1, 1923, Rocco Francis Marchegiano, later known as Rocky Marciano, was born in Brockton, Massachusetts, to Italian immigrants. At 11 months old, he contracted pneumonia, almost claiming his life. However, he emerged victorious from his battle against the ailment.

Athletic Endeavors

Throughout his youth, Marciano exhibited a strong athletic drive. He played baseball and engaged in weightlifting using homemade equipment. After attending high school, he dropped out in 10th grade to support his family by working as a shoemaker, stevedore, and ditch digger. In March 1943, he was drafted into the Army and served in Swansey, Wales, where he worked on a local ferry.

Boxing Career

Amateur Beginnings

Towards the end of his military service, Marciano discovered his passion for boxing. He secured an amateur army championship in 1946 and continued to fight as an amateur after being discharged.

Professional Transition

On March 17, 1947, Marciano transitioned to professional boxing with a bout against Lee Epperson. He knocked out his opponent within three rounds, but surprisingly, he returned to amateur competition.

Renaming and Professional Return

Before one of his fights, the announcer mispronounced his surname as "Marciano." Seeing the potential for a more marketable name, his agent convinced him to adopt it. Marciano officially re-entered the professional ring on July 12, 1948, facing Harry Bilizarian.

Knocking Out the Competition

Marciano proved to be an exceptional professional boxer. He won his first 16 fights by knockout, all within the first five rounds. Only his 17th opponent, Don Mogard, lasted the full 10 rounds. Despite a challenging bout with Ted Lowry, Marciano continued his knockout streak for the next four fights.

Championship and Title Defenses

Victory over Roland La Starza

On March 24, 1950, Marciano fought Roland La Starza. Though he won by unanimous decision, many believed La Starza came closer to defeating him than any other opponent.

Championship Fight against Jersey Joe Walcott

In 1952, Marciano fought Jersey Joe Walcott for the World Heavyweight Championship. Despite being knocked down in the first round, he ultimately prevailed with a left-handed punch in the 13th round, earning the championship title.

Six Successful Title Defenses

Marciano defended his title six times against formidable opponents, including Walcott and La Starza. He remained undefeated throughout his reign.

Retirement and Legacy

Retirement and Business Ventures

At the age of 32 on April 27, 1956, Marciano retired from boxing, undefeated. He ventured into business and achieved significant success.

Tragic Loss

On August 31, 1969, just before his 46th birthday, Rocky Marciano died in a plane crash. He is still remembered as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time, with a record of 49 wins (43 by knockout) and 0 losses.
