Early Career
Johnny González made his professional debut in 1999 at the age of 18. He lost his first two fights by points but then embarked on a long winning streak. In October 2001, González won the NABF North American Bantamweight title (up to 53 kg). In 2002, González lost twice by points to fellow Mexican Ricardo Vargas. In 2003, Johnny won the Mexican Championship. In 2004, González knocked out previously undefeated Americans, Roger González (23-0) and Gabriel Elizondo (17-0).
WBO Bantamweight Champion
In 2005, González knocked out Thai Ratanachai Sor Vorapin in the 7th round to become the new WBO world champion in the bantamweight division. In February 2006, González defended his title by knockout in a fight with American, Mark Johnson. On May 27 of the same year, in a tough fight, González outboxed Mexican Fernando Montiel by split decision to retain his world title. On September 16, 2006, González moved up to the super-bantamweight division for a championship fight with Mexican Israel Vázquez. Vazquez knocked out González and handed him the first early defeat of his professional career. After this fight, Johnny dropped back down to bantamweight.
WBC Bantamweight Champion
In 2007, González defended his title against Colombian Irene Pacheco, but then lost by knockout to Filipino Gerry Peñalosa. In 2008, González defeated former world champion, Colombian Mauricio Pastrana. On May 23, 2009, González lost by knockout to Japanese boxer, Toshiaki Nishioka, in a fight for the WBC world title in the weight category up to 55.3 kg. After the defeat, González moved up to featherweight. In 2010, González won the IBO world title. In 2011, Johnny knocked out Japanese Hozumi Hasegawa to become the new WBC World Champion in the featherweight division.
WBC Featherweight Champion
In April 2012, in his fourth title defense, González defeated Dominican Elio Rojas. In 2012, González lost his title to Mexican Daniel Ponce De Leon. In 2013, González sensationally knocked out rising star and previously undefeated Mexican, Abner Mares (26-0-1), and again became WBC World Champion. On May 24, 2014, in his first title defense, González dealt Guyanese Clive Atwell (12-0-1) his first defeat in a tough fight. In October 2014, in his second defense, González knocked out Mexican Jorge Arce in the 11th round. On March 28, 2015, González lost his title after losing by technical knockout in the 4th round to American Gary Russell Jr.
