Deontay Wilder: The Bronze Bomber
Early Life and Amateur CareerDeontay Wilder was born on October 22, 1985, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. After graduating high school in 2004, he planned to pursue football or basketball. However, after his daughter Naieya was born with spina bifida in 2005, Wilder turned to boxing as a more financially viable option.
In October 2005, he began boxing and quickly achieved success in the amateur ranks. At the 2007 National Golden Gloves Championships, he defeated top-rated opponents, including 2006 Cadet World Champion Isaiah Thomas, to win the Light Heavyweight division. In the US Amateur Championships, he defeated Quatis Graves and James Zimmerman to become the champion.
Olympic Games and Professional Debut
Wilder competed at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, where he won a bronze medal in the Heavyweight (91 kg) category. After the Olympics, he transitioned to professional boxing.
Wilder's professional debut came on November 15, 2008, against Ethan Cox. He knocked out his opponent in the second round, beginning a streak of 32 consecutive knockout victories. Wilder's first fight that lasted more than four rounds was against Harold Sconiers in 2010, where he suffered his first knockdown. However, Wilder knocked down Sconiers four times and eventually emerged victorious.
WBC Heavyweight Champion
In January 2015, Wilder fought Bermane Stiverne for the WBC Heavyweight Championship. Despite never experiencing a knockout defeat in his professional career, Wilder went the distance and won by unanimous decision. He became the new WBC Heavyweight Champion, the first time he had not knocked out an opponent.
Notable Fights and Reign
Wilder successfully defended his title nine times against Eric Molina, Johann Duhaupas, Arthur Szpilka, Chris Arreola, Gerald Washington, Luis Ortiz (twice), Dominic Breazeale, Robert Helenius, and Tyson Fury (first meeting). He holds the record for the longest active knockout streak from the beginning of a career in the Heavyweight division.
Legacy
Deontay Wilder is widely regarded as one of the hardest punchers in boxing history. His devastating right hand has earned him the nickname "The Bronze Bomber." As one of the most dominant Heavyweight champions of his era, Wilder has left an indelible mark on the sport of boxing.
