Jill Abramson - Executive Editor of The New York Times

Jill Abramson was born in New York City and became the first female executive editor of The New York Times in September 2011, a position that had never been held by a woman in the 160-year history of the newspaper. She earned her bachelor's degree in history and literature from Harvard University, where she also served as the arts editor for The Harvard Independent. After her time at Harvard, Abramson worked at Time magazine from 1973 to 1976.

Abramson then spent nearly a decade at The American Lawyer before becoming the managing editor of Legal Times in Washington, D.C. in 1986. After two years in this role, she joined The Wall Street Journal's Washington bureau in 1988 as one of the leading reporters. She eventually rose to the position of deputy bureau chief.

In 1997, Abramson joined The New York Times, initially leading the Washington bureau. It was during her tenure that the newspaper faced significant challenges, such as the events of the spring of 2003, including the Iraq War and the Jayson Blair scandal. These events led to the resignations of executive editor Howell Raines and managing editor Gerald Boyd. Soon after, Bill Keller, Raines' successor, announced that Jill Abramson would be the new managing editor.

In 1995, Abramson and her colleague Jane Mayer published the book "Strange Justice: The Selling of Clarence Thomas," which delved into the story of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. She also served as a professor at Princeton University from 2000 to 2001 and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2001.

In February 2007, Abramson testified as a witness in the United States v. Libby case. On June 2, 2011, it was announced that Jill Abramson would become the executive editor of The New York Times, following the decision of the previous editor, Bill Keller, to leave the newspaper to focus on his writing career. She continues to hold the position of executive editor to this day.
