Biography: Jill Barber
Jill Barber is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and performer. She was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, and is the younger sister of Canadian singer and composer Matthew Barber. Jill attended Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, one of the country's most prestigious universities, before fully dedicating herself to a music career.
Early Career
Jill began recording music in 2002 and signed with the label 'Outside Music.' Over the past eight years, she has released four studio albums. Her debut album, 'A Note to Follow So,' was released in 2002. This was followed by 'Oh Heart' (2004), which won her the 'Music Nova Scotia Awards' for 'Best Female Release of the Year' in 2005. She was also nominated for the 'East Coast Music Awards' in the categories of 'Female Artist of the Year' and 'Best Folk Album of the Year.'
Success and Recognition
In 2006, Jill released her third album, 'For All Time,' and received two awards at the 'East Coast Music Awards' for 'Female Artist of the Year' and 'Album of the Year' in 2007. She was also nominated for 'Best Folk Album of the Year' and 'Composer of the Year' for her song 'Don't Go Easy.' In the same year, Jill won the 'Best of Music Reader's Poll' award by 'The Coast' newspaper in Halifax and her first national award. She toured Eastern Canada with Canadian pop artist Dan Hill as part of 'The Vinyl Cafe' show organized by CBC Radio in February-March 2007. Jill returned to the 'Vinyl Cafe Tour' in 2009, performing alongside Matt Anderson.
In 2008, Jill Barber released 'Chances,' an album featuring orchestral arrangements co-written with producer Les Cooper and the participation of Canadian music legend Ron Sexsmith. This album took Jill's popularity to a new level, with her national tours turning into international ones. 'Chances' earned her two nominations at the prestigious Canadian music award, the 'Juno Awards,' including 'New Artist of the Year.'
Recent Work
In August and September 2010, Jill Barber, along with Les Cooper, started recording material for her new album, tentatively titled 'Mischievous Moon,' which is set to be released on the 'Outside Music' label.
Jill is married to Grant Lawrence, a Vancouver radio host for CBC Radio 3 and a writer. Grant also plays in the amateur hockey team 'Vancouver Flying Vees,' which he formed mainly with well-known Canadian musicians.
