Biography of Jim Dunnigan
Jim Dunnigan is an author, military-political analyst, consultant to the Department of Defense and the State Department of the United States, and a developer of war board games. He is known for his practical approach to military analysis. Currently, he resides in New York.
Early Life and Education
Jim Dunnigan was born in Rockland County, New York. After completing high school, Dunnigan volunteered for military service instead of waiting for the draft. From 1961 to 1964, he served in Korea as a technician, maintaining ballistic missiles. He then enrolled at Pace University, where he studied accounting before transferring to Columbia University to pursue a history degree. He graduated in 1970.
War Game Development
During his time in college, Dunnigan developed an interest in war games. In 1967, he created the game "Jutland," which was published by Avalon Hill. The following year, he developed the game "1914," and in 1970, he released "PanzerBlitz," which sold over 300,000 copies. Meanwhile, Dunnigan founded his own company, Simulations Publications, which produced games and a magazine called "Strategy & Tactics."
From 1966 to 1992, Dunnigan designed over 100 war games and conflict simulators, ranging from "Up against the Wall, Motherfucker" in 1969, depicting student unrest at Columbia University, to the extensive "War in Europe" and the online game "Hundred Years' War," which has been operational since 1992. In 1979, Dunnigan wrote the books "The Complete Wargames Handbook" and "How to Make a War."
Other Contributions and Recognition
In addition to his work in war game development, Dunnigan is the director of StrategyWorld.Com and the editor-in-chief of StrategyPage.Com. His podcasts, in which he discusses history, military affairs, and contemporary politics, regularly appear on StrategyPage.com and Instapundit.com. Dunnigan also lectures at military and academic institutions and frequently appears on television as a commentator on military events.
In 1975, Jim Dunnigan was inducted into the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts & Design Hall of Fame. In 1999, the magazine "Pyramid" named him "one of the most influential people of the millennium in the field of board games."
