Early Life and EducationJiří John was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1923. He began his artistic education at the State School of Graphics before attending the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague from 1946 to 1951.
Artistic Career
John's reputation as a master illustrator of literature was established early on in his career. His illustrations brought to life the works of authors such as Franz Kafka and Karel Čapek. He also explored architecture and sculpture, most notably collaborating on the design of the memorial to Jewish victims of Nazism (with Václav Boštík) and the restoration of the Pinkas Synagogue in Prague.
Modernist Influences
John's artistic style was influenced by the currents of modernism. He found inspiration in the works of Josef Šíma, a fellow Czech artist. In the 1960s, he began creating large-scale paintings that showcased his modernist sensibility.
Teaching and Later Years
In 1963, John became a professor of drawing and design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He held this position until his retirement in 1990. During his later years, John continued to work as an artist and exhibited his works internationally until his death in 2016.
