Early Life and Education

Vasily Ivanovich Sternberg was born in 1818 to a mining official. He showed early promise as an artist, pursuing training at the Imperial Academy of Arts as a non-resident student. In 1835, he was accepted as a full-time student and studied under the guidance of M.N. Vorobiev for landscape painting. However, he also displayed a strong affinity for genre painting.

Artistic Development in the Ukraine

During the summer months, Sternberg would visit the estate of his patron, G.S. Tarnovsky, in Ukraine. These trips exposed him to the vibrant Ukrainian culture and landscape, which he expertly captured in his pencil drawings, watercolors, and paintings. His works, such as "Fair in the Town of Ichen" and "Consecration of Easter Cakes in the Ukraine," earned him accolades from the Academy, including a gold medal in 1837 and a grand gold medal in 1838.

Travels and Influence

In 1840, Sternberg traveled to Orenburg as part of Count Perovsky's expedition to Khiva. Subsequently, he was sent to Italy on a scholarship from the Academy. While in Rome, he continued to work diligently, but felt a longing for his homeland and the subjects he knew best.

Return to Russia Denied

Tragically, fate prevented Sternberg from returning to Russia. He died in Rome in 1845, at the height of his artistic potential.

Notable Works and Legacy

Among Sternberg's notable works are "Game of Blind Man's Buff on the Estate of G.S. Tarnovsky," "Mill in the Steppe," "Italian Women at a Pond," and "Portrait of the Artist."
