Joachim Rumor: Biography
Early Life and Nazi MembershipJoachim Rumor was born in Hamburg, Germany on August 6, 1910. In 1935, he joined both the Nazi Party (NSDAP) and the Schutzstaffel (SS).
SS Career Begins
Rumor quickly rose through the ranks of the SS, becoming an Untersturmführer in November 1935. He was assigned to the "Germania" Regiment as an Obersturmführer. In 1938, he commanded the 12th Company and became a Hauptsturmführer in the SS-Verfügungstruppe (SS-VT), which later became the 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich."
World War II Service
Rumor fought in the Polish Campaign (1939) and the Battle of France (1940). In 1941, he commanded the 2nd SS Battalion in Operation Marita (the Greek Campaign). In 1942, he transferred to the SS Cavalry Division as commander of its artillery regiment.
Awards and Recognition
Rumor received several awards for his bravery and leadership. In 1942, he was awarded the German Cross in Gold for his actions in battle. In 1943, he received the Knight's Cross for his role in the Battle of Dnieper.
Later Commands and Promotions
In 1944, Rumor assumed command of the 8th SS Cavalry Division "Florian Geyer" and was promoted to Standartenführer. He was mentioned in the Wehrmachtbericht (a news bulletin highlighting military achievements) in October 1944. In November 1944, he became a Brigadeführer.
Budapest and Death
Rumor commanded his division in the Battle of Budapest. In February 1945, while attempting to break out of the Soviet encirclement, Rumor committed suicide on February 11, 1945. He was posthumously awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves for his actions in Budapest.
