Hans-Max Gamper was born in Winterthur, Switzerland, on March 12, 1877. As a child, he displayed an affinity for sports, excelling as a cyclist and runner. His passion for football became evident while playing for FC Basel, where he served as captain.
Founding of FC Barcelona
In 1898, Gamper embarked on a business venture in Africa. En route, he visited his uncle in Barcelona and was instantly captivated by the city. Deciding to make it his home, he adopted the Catalan name Joan Gamper.
Inspired by his love for football, Gamper placed an advertisement in the newspaper "Los Deportes" on October 22, 1899, inviting enthusiasts to join him in forming a club. Eleven individuals responded, leading to the birth of Football Club Barcelona.
Leadership and Impact
Initially serving as a board member and captain, Gamper became president of FC Barcelona in 1908. Under his guidance, the club flourished, winning its first trophy, the Macaya Cup, in 1901. Gamper also played a crucial role in the establishment of the Spanish Football Federation.
