João Martins: Pioneer of the European Cup
Early Career at Sporting LisbonJoão Martins was a Portuguese footballer who made history as a player for Sporting Lisbon and the Portuguese national team. He played a pivotal role in Sporting's golden era, winning seven Primeira Liga titles and two Taça de Portugal trophies.
European Cup Debutant
Martins holds a significant place in the annals of the European Cup (now UEFA Champions League). In 1955, he became the first-ever goalscorer in the competition's history, netting both goals in Sporting's 3-3 draw with FK Partizan in the inaugural match. Notably, he also became the first player to score a brace in the tournament.
Legacy and Passing
After retiring from football, Martins settled in France and worked at a factory. Tragically, he passed away in France in November 1993 at the age of 66, succumbing to heart failure. Despite his untimely demise, his legacy as a groundbreaking player in the European Cup remains etched in history.
