Prelude to Presidency
Joao Lourenço, the 3rd President of Angola, rose to prominence as an influential figure in the Angolan political landscape. Born into a family of modest means, Lourenço was inspired by his father's anti-colonial activism and pursued a career in politics.
Military and Political Career
During Angola's civil war, Lourenço fought alongside the MPLA (Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola). His military experience, coupled with his political acumen, paved the way for his rise within the MPLA's ranks. In 1998, he became the party's General Secretary, cementing his position as a key decision-maker.
Ascent to the Presidency
In 2016, Lourenço was named successor to long-standing President José Eduardo dos Santos, who had ruled Angola for nearly four decades. This announcement marked a significant shift in the Angolan political landscape, as it signaled the end of dos Santos' authoritarian rule.
"Angolan Thaw" Policy
Upon assuming office in 2017, Lourenço initiated a series of reforms known as the "Angolan Thaw." Central to this policy was an anti-corruption campaign that targeted dos Santos' family and associates, ending years of nepotism and corruption. Lourenço also strengthened his control over the MPLA and the state, consolidating his position as Angola's leader.
Anti-Corruption Campaign
Lourenço's anti-corruption drive was relentless, with several high-profile figures being arrested or removed from their positions. His daughter, Isabel dos Santos, was removed as the head of the national oil company, Sonangol, while his son, José Filomeno dos Santos, was arrested on corruption charges. This crackdown on corruption sent a strong message that the era of impunity was over.
Assertion of Authority
Despite facing resistance from loyalists of dos Santos, Lourenço gradually asserted his authority. In 2018, he became Chairman of the MPLA, effectively replacing dos Santos as the head of the ruling party. He also purged the party of dos Santos' supporters and appointed his loyalists to key positions, ensuring his control over both the government and the MPLA.
Personal Life
Joao Lourenço is married and has six children. He is fluent in several languages, including Portuguese, Russian, English, and Spanish. An avid sportsman, he enjoys soccer and Shotokan karate.
