João Moutinho: Rising Star to International Icon
Born in Portimão, Portugal, João Moutinho's footballing journey began with his hometown club Portimonense. However, at 13, he joined Sporting CP in Lisbon.
Rising Through the Ranks
At 17, Moutinho caught the attention of coach José Peseiro and joined Sporting's first team for preseason matches. Despite returning to the youth team under Paulo Bento, he helped them win the title alongside talents like Miguel Veloso and Nani. In 2005, he made his debut with the senior team in the Portuguese Cup.
Establishing Himself
In 2005, Moutinho solidified his place in the first team and became the only midfielder in the Portuguese league to start every game. His performances earned him the Player of the Match awards against Feyenoord and Newcastle, guiding Sporting to the UEFA Cup final.
Captaincy and Success
In 2006/07, after Ricardo Sá Pinto left the club, Moutinho was named vice-captain at just 19. The following season, he became captain and moved to the right flank with the arrival of Leandro Romagnoli. Moutinho remained a key player, scoring the winner against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Transfer to Porto
In 2010, Moutinho joined Porto, winning the Portuguese league title in his first season despite not scoring in the league. He also played a pivotal role in Porto winning the Europa League.
Joining Monaco
In 2013, Moutinho and teammate James Rodríguez moved to Monaco for €70 million. He scored in the Champions League against Málaga and made 43 appearances during his time there.
International Career
Moutinho made his Portugal debut at 18 in 2005. He played in the 2008 European Championship and assisted Raul Meireles' goal against Turkey in their opening match. He has won the European Championship with Portugal in 2016.
Personal Life
Moutinho is married to Ana Sofia Gomes. They have two daughters: Lara (born in 2009) and Vitória (born in 2015).
