Joaquín Almunia

Early Life and Education

Joaquín Almunia was born in Bilbao, Spain. He earned degrees in law and economics at the Jesuit University of Deusto, and later studied at the University of Paris and Harvard University.

Political Career in Spain

In 1979, Almunia was elected to the Spanish Cortes Generales (Parliament) representing the Socialist Party. He held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Labour and Social Affairs (1982-1986) and Minister of Public Administration (1986-1991). In 1997, he became the leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE).

Candidacy for Prime Minister

Almunia ran as the PSOE candidate for Prime Minister in the 2000 election. However, his party lost to the People's Party and Almunia resigned as leader shortly after.

European Commission Roles

In 2004, Almunia was appointed European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs. In 2010, he joined the newly formed European Commission of José Manuel Barroso as Vice-President and Commissioner for Competition.
