Michael Clifton Burgess was born on December 23, 1950, in Rochester, Minnesota, USA, to parents Harry Meredith Burgess and Norma Crowhurst. He obtained four higher education degrees, two from the University of North Texas and one each from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston and the University of Texas at Dallas.
After completing his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at a hospital in Dallas, Burgess started working as a gynecologist in Denton County with an office in Louisville. He quickly gained a reputation as an excellent specialist, delivering over three thousand babies and becoming highly respected throughout the state of Texas.
Political Career
As a member of the Republican Party, Burgess decided to run for the US Congress in 2002. He chose the catchy campaign slogan, "We need a doctor in Congress." In the initial round of voting, his opponent, Democrat Scott Armey, had a significant lead until the newspaper "The Dallas Morning News" published some questionable facts about Armey's deals with his friends. This caused Armey's ratings to plummet, leading his party to replace him with a new candidate, Paul LeBon.
Interestingly, Burgess had previously delivered LeBon's wife's baby, and despite their differing political beliefs, they were acquainted. In the final round of voting, Burgess defeated LeBon with 55% of the votes to LeBon's 45%. On January 3, 2003, Michael Burgess assumed his duties as a US Congressman.
Political Achievements
Burgess served on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, followed by the Committee on Energy and Commerce. He was re-elected to Congress twice more, both times with the slogan, "We need to keep the doctor in Congress."
Burgess went on to become a representative of Congress in the White House and secured positions in four subcommittees: Health, Energy, Oversight and Investigations, and Consumer Protection. During the 110th Assembly of Congress, Burgess was elected Vice Chairman of the Republican Committee in the House of Representatives.
Today, he is one of nine doctors in the US Congress and one of seven in the House of Representatives. Michael Burgess is married to Lore Burgess, and they do not have any children.
