Joaquín Caparrós, born in Utrera, Spain, began his football journey with Real Madrid's youth academy. However, his aspirations as a player were short-lived. After playing for several other clubs, including Leganés, he retired at the age of 26 and transitioned into coaching.

Caparrós initially worked with lesser-known and amateur teams in the lower divisions. His first significant coaching job came in 1996 when he joined professional club Recreativo de Huelva, which played in the third division (Segunda B) at the time. He spent three seasons with the team, guiding them to promotion to the Segunda Division in 1998.
