His father, John, once picked up a hitchhiker who turned out to be Arlyn Dunetz, a former secretary from Manhattan. They fell in love and decided to travel together, embracing the hippie ideals of freedom. They took on the surname Phoenix, after the mythological bird, and soon had their first child, River. They later had three more children, Rain, Liberty Mariposa, and Summer. When the family was in Puerto Rico, Arlyn gave birth to Joaquin.
