Joe Abercrombie: Master of Grimdark Fantasy
Early Life and EducationJoe Abercrombie was born in Lancaster, England, and attended Lancaster Royal Grammar School. He went on to study psychology at the University of Manchester.
Career Background
After graduating, Abercrombie spent time in the television industry before becoming a freelance film editor. In between editing jobs, he began writing his debut novel, The Blade Itself, in 2002. He completed the manuscript in 2004.
The First Law Trilogy
The Blade Itselfwas published by Gollancz in 2006. It was followed by two sequels, Before They Are Hangedand Last Argument of Kings, completing the First Law Trilogy. Abercrombie's novels have twice been voted "Books of the Year" by visitors to the SFF World website.
Recognition and Accolades
In 2008, Abercrombie participated in the BBC World of Fantasy television series alongside fantasy authors such as Michael Moorcock, Terry Pratchett, and China Miéville. His work has been highly praised for its grim, realistic portrayal of violence and war.
Current Life
Abercrombie currently resides in Bath, Somerset, England. His novels have been translated into over 30 languages. In Russian, the First Law Trilogy has been published by Eksmo/Domino in the "Black Fantasy" series.
