Joe Pierce: A British Student and Adventurer
Joe Pierce, a 23-year-old British student specializing in physical geography, found himself facing the challenge of finding affordable accommodation after breaking up with his girlfriend. The rent for a flat was simply too high for him to afford on his own, prompting him to come up with a unique solution.
Finding a Unique Home
Instead of searching for a cheaper apartment, Joe decided to purchase a used 42-year-old yacht. He found the vessel online and managed to acquire it for a mere £800, which was equivalent to two months' rent. Despite realizing that the yacht lacked many modern comforts, Joe decided to make it his home for the next 18 months.
Living on a Yacht
During his time aboard the yacht, Joe successfully completed his master's dissertation, saving himself £5600 in accommodation costs. The yacht, however, presented its fair share of challenges. The motor of the vessel was manufactured in 1970, and the ceiling height in the highest compartment was only 1.5 meters, making it uncomfortable for Joe, who stood at 1.8 meters tall. Nevertheless, Joe's determination to save money and avoid exorbitant rent prices gave him the strength to adapt to his new living situation.
Adapting to Life at Sea
Joe received valuable assistance from the local shipyard staff, as he was not particularly skilled in manual labor. The advice and guidance of experienced craftsmen helped him overcome his lack of expertise. The daily maintenance costs for the yacht amounted to only £1, which was significantly cheaper than renting an apartment.
A Unique Floating Home
Joe eventually transformed the yacht into his own floating apartment, although it lacked the level of comfort one would find in a conventional living space. Despite the occasional discomfort of bumping his head on the low ceiling, Joe regarded his floating home as a worthy alternative to being homeless. He claimed to have enjoyed the experience and saved a significant amount of money in the process.
Continuing Adventures
Joe successfully completed his master's degree in December and recently finished a 500-mile swim from North Wales to his hometown of Totland, Isle of Wight. Upon his return, his yacht caused quite a stir in Totland, and Joe even hosted a few lively parties on its deck.
