Joe Valachi, born on September 22, 1903, was a well-known figure in the criminal underworld. At a young age, he gained notoriety as a skilled burglar in the Bronx. Soon, Valachi found himself in the group led by the infamous mafia boss Vito Genovese, serving as his personal driver for over three decades.
Revealing the Existence of the Mafia
In October 1963, Joe Valachi made headlines when he declared to a senator from Arkansas that the mafia truly existed. He expressed his willingness to provide society with information about its history, detailed accounts of mafia activities, traditions, and more. Valachi also promised to assist in the investigation of unsolved crimes and the identification of key figures within the criminal world. His testimony was broadcasted on radio, televised, and published in various media outlets, enraging active members of the Cosa Nostra.
The Valachi Papers and Legacy
Valachi's significant act was motivated by the realization that his life among the mafia had been detrimental not only to society but also to his own family. By confessing and revealing details of the mafia structure, Valachi sought the protection and assistance of the United States government, as well as to avoid the death penalty for his crimes.
In 1966, while in prison, Joe Valachi attempted suicide but was unsuccessful. However, he eventually succumbed to death from a heart attack on April 3, 1971. In 1968, journalist Peter Maas compiled Valachi's story and published it in a book titled "The Valachi Papers," which became a bestseller. Later, a film adaptation was made based on Maas' work.
