Charles Joel Nordström, known professionally as Joel Kinnaman, was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. His mother was a Swedish physician, while his father, Steve Kinnaman, was a British immigrant to the United States. Due to his father's heritage, Joel holds dual Swedish-American citizenship.

Joel had an early interest in the arts, and one of his five sisters, Melinda Kinnaman, also pursued acting. To master the English language, Joel spent a year in Texas as an exchange student.
