Early Life and NHL Career
Canadian hockey player Matt Carkner embarked on his professional journey in 1996 when he was drafted in the 8th round by the Dallas Stars. After two years as a free agent, he joined the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in 1998. Over the next several seasons, Carkner was traded to the Ottawa Senators (2000), Washington Capitals (2003), and Florida Panthers (2004).
From Pittsburgh to Success
In 2007, Carkner found himself in Pittsburgh, where he played for the Penguins and won the Calder Cup with their affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, in 2008. That same year, he participated in the AHL All-Star Game.
International Success
Carkner's international career reached its peak in 2009 when he represented Canada at the World Championships, earning a silver medal.
Russia, Switzerland, and Legacy
Following his AHL success, Carkner ventured to Russia, playing for Severstal and SKA St. Petersburg. In 2010, he moved to Switzerland, joining HC Bern, where he achieved notable milestones. In the 2012/13 season, he became the top-scoring defenseman in the Swiss League. Additionally, he won the Spengler Cup in 2012 and 2015.
Retirement and Coaching Career
Carkner retired as a player in 2016 and transitioned into coaching. He currently serves as an assistant coach for the Kalamazoo Wings in the East Coast Hockey League.
