Early Life and Family
Joie King, the youngest of three acting sisters, was born in 1999 into a Jewish-American family in Los Angeles. Her birthday falls on July 30th. Her sisters, Hunter and Kelli King, share their name with the actress's grandfather, Joseph. Jamie, their mother, is a homemaker, and their father, Terry King, a former arm-wrestling athlete and advisor to Sylvester Stallone, supported their daughter's passion for acting. King has cited her sisters and grandmother, a former theater actress, as early inspirations.
Career Beginnings
King made her acting debut at the tender age of four in a commercial for cereal. At six, she landed a role in the short film "Grace." The scene of her character drowning in freezing ocean water left a lasting impression that solidified her resolve to pursue acting as a career.
Filmography
Since then, King has worked consistently, with roles in seven TV shows and telefilms within a year of "Grace." Her credits include characters in "Entourage," "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody," and "Jericho." King also ventured into voice acting, notably as Katie in "Horton Hears a Who!," known for the memorable line, "I have a whole world inside me, and they're all ponies. They eat rainbows and poop butterflies." She also voiced the role of Peach in "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" and Jessie in "Cars Toon: Mater's Tall Tales."
Breakthrough Roles
2010 marked a new chapter in King's career with her breakout role in "Ramona and Beezus," alongside Selena Gomez. The same year, she appeared in the TV series "Ghost Whisperer" as Cassidy for two episodes.
King's filmography expanded to include blockbuster films, including "Crazy, Stupid, Love" (2011), where she played the daughter of Steve Carell's character, Cal. This was followed by a casting as the young Talia al Ghul in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" (2012) and a role in "Oz the Great and Powerful" (2013).
Zachary Quinto's Influence
During the latter project, King met Zach Braff, who played Oz's circus assistant, and learned about his upcoming film "Wish I Was Here." She later revealed in an interview that the script's depiction of a Jewish family moved her deeply, bringing her to tears.
King took on the role of the protagonist's religious daughter in "Wish I Was Here," which premiered at Sundance in 2014 to a standing ovation. She subsequently collaborated with Braff again in "Going in Style" (2017), a comedy about senior citizens planning a bank heist starring Martin Freeman and Michael Caine.
Television Success
That same year, King found another "film father" in the lead role of Greta, the daughter of Officer Grimly in the first season of "Fargo." Colin Hanks co-starred. This period also saw King's appearances in action films "Independence Day: Resurgence" and "White House Down" and a horror role in "The Conjuring," which featured another rising star, Mckenna Grace.
King joined forces with James Franco in "Zeroville" (2017). In late 2017, she starred in another horror film "Wish Upon," centered around a mysterious box. However, it received negative reviews from critics and audiences, failing to elevate King's career significantly.
Personal Life
King is open about her current relationship with Jacob Elordi, an Australian up-and-coming actor. Despite having a limited filmography consisting of short films and cameos, Elordi landed a lead role in the romance "The Kissing Booth," which sparked his relationship with King. In an interview with Rogue magazine, King expressed her close friendship with Elordi and Joey Courtney and her special bond with Elordi while playing Noah's girlfriend Elle. She previously dated Dylan Sprayberry, the star of "Teen Wolf."
King is an avid fan of Spider-Man comics and movies, as well as Batman. She has expressed her admiration for "Sherlock" and aspires to work with Benedict Cumberbatch and Leonardo DiCaprio. King stands 5'4" (1.63 m) tall and weighs 112 lbs (51 kg). She is left-handed, enjoys Earl Grey tea, and supports "Meals on Wheels" with her grandmother.
Current Projects
In 2016, King announced via Instagram her casting in the third season of "The Flash" as the supervillain Magenta. Although the show was set to premiere in 2017, her appearance never materialized due to undisclosed reasons.
2018 saw the release of a new film starring King. She plays the lead role in "The Kissing Booth," a romantic drama based on a novel by Beth Reekles. A sequel has been hinted at by King in an interview with Seventeen.com.
Despite her busy schedule, King maintains a close friendship with Selena Gomez, whom she considers an inspiration for her kindness and positivity.
