Simon Baker is an Australian film and television actor. He was born on July 30, 1969, in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. Baker grew up in a Catholic household and immigrated to the United States in 1995.
Early Life and Career
Baker attended Bellingen High School and graduated in 1987. After high school, he moved to Sydney to pursue a career as a nurse. However, his life took a different turn when he started accompanying a friend to auditions and ended up getting cast in various roles. He began appearing on Australian television in the late 1980s under the name "Simon Baker-Denny." He appeared in music videos for Melissa Tkautz's song "Read My Lips" and the Australian trio "Euphoria's" music video for "Love You Right" in 1991.
Breakthrough and International Success
Baker gained recognition for his role as James Healey in the successful series "Home and Away," as well as in the soap opera "E Street" and the series "Heartbreak High." He then relocated to the United States, where he changed his last name to Baker. He landed a significant role as Matt Reynolds in Curtis Hanson's award-winning thriller "L.A. Confidential," which opened doors for supporting roles in several films.
In 2000, Baker portrayed astronaut Chip Pettengill in the science fiction action film "Red Planet" alongside Val Kilmer, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Benjamin Bratt. He also played the lead role in the television series "The Guardian," which aired for three seasons in 2001. Additionally, he appeared in Charles Shyer's drama "The Story of Us" and portrayed altruistic hero Riley Denbo in George A. Romero's horror film "Land of the Dead." Baker showcased his versatility with the role of David Walker, Elaine Walker's unfortunate husband, in the comedy-drama "Book of Love."
In recent years, Baker has starred as Brian Kelly in the romantic drama "Something New" and as Roderick Blank, the main character in the comedy "Sex and Death 101," alongside Winona Ryder. He also played the lead role of Jeff Breen in the short-lived television series "Smith" and earned a significant role as Christian Thompson in the film "The Devil Wears Prada" in 2006.
Personal Life
Simon Baker is married to Australian actress Rebecca Rigg. The couple has three children: Stella, Claude, and Harry. They previously lived in Malibu, California, but have since relocated to Sydney temporarily. Currently, the family resides in Los Angeles.
