A Danish Duke in Moscow
Prince John, the son of Frederick II of Denmark and brother of King Christian IV, played a significant role in Russian history.
Arrival in Moscow
In 1602, Prince John arrived in Moscow at the invitation of Tsar Boris Godunov. He was offered the position of a Russian appanage prince and agreed to the proposal.
A Royal Match
Tsar Boris was overjoyed by John's arrival. His daughter, Xenia, and the Tsarina were eager to meet the prince, but Moscow's strict customs prevented them from seeing him directly.
Favorable Impressions
Bishop Arseniy Elassonsky described John as "handsome, intelligent, and wealthy," qualities that endeared him to the royal family and the court. The Tsar and Tsarina grew fond of him and planned a marriage between John and Xenia.
Cultural Immersion and Ill-Fate
John immersed himself in Russian customs, while Xenia embarked on a pilgrimage to the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. Tragically, John fell severely ill and passed away in Moscow before the wedding could take place.
Royal Mourning and Rewards
Tsar Boris was deeply saddened by John's untimely demise. He generously rewarded the prince's entourage and arranged for their safe return to Denmark.
