Johann Adolf, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp
Johann Adolf was the third son of Duke Adolf of Holstein-Gottorp and Christine of Hesse-Kassel. He was the first Lutheran administrator of the Prince-Bishopric of Lübeck (1586-1607) and the administrator of the Prince-Archbishopric of Bremen (1589-1596). He became Duke after the death of his two older brothers.
Duke of Holstein-Gottorp
When Johann Adolf inherited the Duchy of Holstein-Gottorp in 1590, the Bremen Chapter, fearing that he might incorporate the Prince-Archbishopric into the Duchy, forced him to resign as Administrator in favor of his younger brother Johann Frederick.
Visit to England
In the spring of 1598, Johann Adolf secretly visited England to meet his sister-in-law, Queen Anne.
Marriage and Family
On August 30, 1596, Johann Adolf married Princess Augusta of Denmark, daughter of King Frederick II of Denmark. They had eight children:
