Christoph Matthäus Pfaff was a German theologian born in 1686 in Leonberg, Württemberg. He studied theology at the University of Tübingen.

Academic Career

After teaching in Jena, Pfaff joined the faculty of his alma mater, the University of Tübingen, in 1733. He served there until his death, with a brief interruption from 1736 to 1739 when he held a chair in theology at the University of Göttingen.

Major Works

Pfaff's most significant contribution to scholarship was his "Attempt at a Detailed Church History of the New Testament" (1768-1773). This work provided a comprehensive examination of the historical development of the early Christian church. Additionally, he prepared a new edition of the "Fundamentals of Theology" by Johann Gerhard.

Family Connections

Pfaff was a descendant of the Cotta family, which originated in Italy and settled in Thuringia in the 16th century. His cousin, Johann Friedrich Cotta, was a prominent publisher.
