Early Life and Education
Johann George, Chevalier de Saxe, was the illegitimate son of Elector August the Strong of Saxony and Princess Ursula Lubomirska. Recognized by his father, he initially held the title of Prince of Teschen before being known as the Chevalier de Saxe.
Growing up in his mother's palace in Dresden, Johann George received a Jesuit education at the urging of his mother and prepared to join the Order of Malta. In 1718, he entered the Jesuit seminary in Rome.
Military Career
In 1724, Johann George's father granted him permission to pursue a military career, following in the footsteps of his half-brother Maurice, known as Comte de Saxe. Sent to the court of Lorraine in Lunéville, he indulged in court life and gambling, amassing significant debts.
Rise to High Rank
Johann George's military career began during the Seven Years' War. Captured by the Prussians and later released, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Saxon army, director of the War College, and governor of Dresden.
Legacy
Johann George, Chevalier de Saxe, died in 1774. Remembered as a skilled general and a controversial figure due to his gambling and extravagance, he played a significant role in Saxon military history.
