Biography of Johann Christian Langemann
Johann Christian Langemann was a German doctor, known not only for his administrative and medical work but also for his close friendship with Schiller and Goethe and his participation in editing the Jena Literatur-Zeitung. He studied jurisprudence and theology in Leipzig but left due to his advocacy for university reform. Langemann then studied medicine in Jena, where he obtained his medical degree in 1797. His teacher in Jena was the philosopher Fichte. He wrote numerous works on obstetrics and mental illnesses. While working in Bayreuth, he became a reformer of psychiatric hospitals in Germany. He served as an advisor to the Prussian king on healthcare issues. Langemann believed that mental illnesses were manifestations of uncontrollable passion. One of his students was Ideler.
