Biography of Johannes Barbarus
Johannes Barbarus was an Estonian poet, writer, and political figure. He was born on October 20, 1890, in Parnu, Estonia. Barbarus completed his education at the gymnasium in Parnu and later studied at Kiev University from 1910 to 1914, specializing in medicine.
Early Career and World War I
During World War I, from 1915 to 1918, Barbarus served as a military doctor. He actively participated in the Estonian War of Independence from 1918 to 1920 and was awarded the Estonian Order of the Cross of Liberty, although he refused to accept it. In the 1920s and 1930s, Barbarus worked as a physician in Parnu while also pursuing his literary career.
Literary and Political Activities
Barbarus began his literary activities in the late 1910s and early 1920s under the pseudonym Johannes Barbarus. He became a member of the literary group Siuru during this time. He was known for his radical socialist political beliefs.
Role in Estonian Government
When Soviet troops entered Estonia, Barbarus led the Estonian government from June 21 to August 25, 1940. After the incorporation of the Estonian SSR into the Soviet Union on August 25, 1940, he served as the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Estonian SSR until his death.
Final Years and Legacy
During the German occupation of the Estonian SSR from 1941 to 1944, Barbarus went into exile. After the expulsion of German forces, he returned to his homeland. However, in 1946, Barbarus tragically ended his own life.
