Jamaat Ali Shah Jatoi: Pakistani Politician and Prime Minister
Jamaat Ali Shah Jatoi was a prominent Pakistani politician who served as Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1990 to 1993.
Early Life and Education
Jatoi was born in 1923 in Karachi, British India. After completing his secondary education, he left for Cambridge University in 1947 to pursue higher studies. However, he had to return home in 1952 due to his father's severe illness.
Political Career
Provincial and National Assembly MemberJatoi's political journey began in 1952 when he was elected as Chairman of the District Council of Nawabshah. At 29, he became the youngest district council chairman in the subcontinent. He went on to serve as a member of the West Pakistan Assembly from 1958 to 1970. In 1970, he was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan.
Ministerial Positions
From 1971 to 1973, Jatoi held the cabinet portfolios of Political Affairs, Natural Resources, and Communications. Later, he served as Chief Minister of Sindh Province from 1973 to 1977.
Opposition Leader
After the imposition of martial law in 1977, Jatoi joined the opposition alliance, "Movement for Restoration of Democracy" (MRD). He was arrested twice, in 1983 and 1985.
Founder of National People's Party
In 1986, Jatoi founded the National People's Party (NPP), which became a prominent left-wing party in Pakistan.
Prime Minister
In 1990, Jatoi was appointed as the Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan following the resignation of Benazir Bhutto's government. He formed an alliance with Bhutto and played a key role in ousting Nawaz Sharif from the premiership in 1993.
Later Career
Jatoi remained active in politics until his demise in 2010. He continued to advocate for democratic values and the rights of the common people.
