Early Life and EducationJohann Cuspinian was born in Schweinfurt, Germany, in 1473. He studied medicine and the humanities at the University of Vienna, where he became a professor of medicine in 1503.
Diplomatic Missions
Cuspinian served as a diplomat for Emperor Maximilian I, undertaking several missions on his behalf. His experiences are documented in his diary, which was published in the "Fontes rerum austriacarum" collection.
Scholarly Pursuits
Alongside his diplomatic duties, Cuspinian was an accomplished scholar. He edited and published works by classical and medieval authors. His most significant historical work was "De Caesaribus atque imperatoribus romanis opus insigne," which chronicled the history of the Roman emperors up to the death of Maximilian. This work was translated into German and published in 1541.
University Service
In 1525, Cuspinian was elected rector of the University of Vienna, a position he held for several terms. Under his leadership, the university underwent significant reforms and advancements.
Later Years
Cuspinian retired from public service in 1540 and devoted his time to writing and scholarly pursuits. He died in Vienna in 1529, leaving behind a legacy as a distinguished diplomat, scholar, and university administrator.
