Early Life and Education
Johannes Willebrands was born in Bovenkarspel, Netherlands, on September 4, 1909, as Jan Willebrands. He received his education at the seminary in Warmond and the Angelicum in Rome.
Priestly Ordination and Doctrinal Studies
On May 26, 1934, Willebrands was ordained a priest in Warmond. He continued his studies in Rome from 1934 to 1937, returning to the Netherlands in 1937 to serve as a priest in Amsterdam and teach philosophy at the main seminary in Warmond. In 1945, he became the rector of the seminary, a position he held until 1960.
Ecumenical Advocacy
Willebrands displayed a keen interest in Christian unity, serving as chairman of the Willebrord Association, which promoted ecumenism in the Netherlands. In 1951, he organized the Catholic Conference on Ecumenical Questions.
Vatican Appointment and Second Vatican Council
Pope John XXIII appointed Willebrands as secretary of the newly established Secretariat for Christian Unity on June 24, 1960. He became a participant in the Second Vatican Council, where he contributed to documents on ecumenism, religious freedom, and relations with non-Christian religions.
Titular Bishopric and Cardinal Elevation
On June 4, 1964, Willebrands was appointed titular bishop of Mauriana. The ordination was performed by Pope Paul VI on June 28, 1964. On April 28, 1969, he was elevated to the College of Cardinals as Cardinal Deacon of Saints Cosmas and Damian.
Archbishop of Utrecht and Papal Office
On December 6, 1975, Cardinal Willebrands was appointed Archbishop of Utrecht and served as Ordinary of the Military Ordinariate of the Netherlands until 1982. He retired as archbishop on December 3, 1983. He was also appointed Cardinal Priest of Saint Sebastian in the Catacombs on the same date.
Later Career and Death
In the later years of his life, Cardinal Willebrands participated in the 1978 papal conclaves and served as co-chair of the International Joint Commission for the Catholic-Orthodox Dialogue from 1979 to 1989. He lost the right to vote in papal elections on September 4, 1989, upon reaching the age of 80. He passed away on August 2, 2006, at the age of 96, as the oldest living cardinal at the time.
