John Bancroft: A Pioneering Sexologist and Kinsey Institute Director
John Bancroft is an American psychiatrist and sexologist who made significant contributions to the field of sexual research.
Early Life and Education
Born in the United Kingdom, Bancroft obtained his Bachelor of Medicine degree from the University of Cambridge in 1960. He later earned his PhD from the same institution in 1970.
Director of the Kinsey Institute
In 1995, Bancroft became the third director of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction at Indiana University. He held this position until 2004. During his tenure, Bancroft guided the institute's research and advocacy efforts on sexuality-related issues.
Response to Kinsey Allegations
In 1998, Bancroft addressed allegations against Alfred Kinsey, the founder of the Kinsey Institute. He acknowledged that certain data in Kinsey's book "Sexual Behavior in the Human Male" was based on the diary of an adult who had engaged in illegal sexual contact with children. However, Bancroft emphasized that Kinsey had condemned these actions and had respected the anonymity of his sources. Bancroft reiterated the Institute's stance that Kinsey himself had never engaged in sexual contact with minors or sought to justify such behavior.
Later Career
After stepping down as director of the Kinsey Institute in 2004, Bancroft continued his work as a professor of psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine. He remained a prominent figure in the field of sexology, publishing numerous books and articles and actively participating in research and advocacy.
