Early Life and EducationJohn Blocki was born in a feudal estate near Königsberg, Prussia, to a Prussian-Polish nobleman and a Pomeranian countess. In 1850, his family fled political turmoil and settled in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Young John attended public and private schools before moving to Chicago, where he spent the rest of his life.
Pharmaceutical Career and Business Ventures
At 14, Blocki apprenticed under a pharmacist in Sheboygan. In 1862, he joined the pharmaceutical firm Fuller, French and Fuller in Chicago. Three years later, he established his own wholesale and retail pharmaceutical business, Blocki, Dietzsche & Co., specializing in chemicals, perfumes, and essential oils.
Perfumery and Cosmetic Success
From the start, Blocki had a knack for perfumery. His fragrances gained significant popularity in Chicago, and he established his business as a leading retailer of fine scents. In 1895, he and his son, Frederick, dissolved their pharmaceutical operations and focused solely on perfume and cosmetic production.
Contributions to the Industry
Blocki was an early advocate for the American perfume industry. He served as Vice President of the New York Perfume Manufacturers' Association and founded the Chicago Veteran Druggists' Association. He also actively supported the UIC College of Pharmacy, believing in the importance of training professionals.
Artistic Packaging and Innovation
Blocki's perfumes were not only renowned for their quality but also for their elegant presentation. His "Perfume Palace" on Michigan Avenue was a spectacle, and in 1907, he secured one of the first patents in the country for perfume packaging. He was known for his openness, often giving tours of his laboratories and showrooms.
Personal Character and Legacy
Beyond his business ventures, Blocki was a respected community figure. He was a member of various social clubs and donated generously to charitable causes. His energy, enthusiasm, and unwavering dedication to his craft earned him admiration and numerous awards. John Blocki died in 1934 at the age of 88, leaving a legacy as a pioneer in the American perfume industry and an unforgettable entrepreneur who dedicated himself to the betterment of his community.
