Biography of Francis Kurkdjian
Francis Nurhan Kurkdjian was born on May 14, 1969, in Paris, France, into an Armenian family. His parents fled the Ottoman Empire during the Armenian Genocide and settled in France. From a young age, Francis enjoyed music and dance and initially planned to become a ballet dancer. However, he was unable to gain admission to the Paris Opera School of Dance on a competitive basis in 1983.

Despite this setback, Kurkdjian developed a serious interest in perfumery among his various other hobbies. In 1985, at the age of thirteen, he made the firm decision to become a creator of scents, and this time fate favored him. In 1990, he enrolled in the ISIPCA Institute, specializing in the training of future perfumers, in Versailles. Three years later, Kurkdjian was accepted into the major company "Quest International," but he decided to continue his education and obtained a master's degree in natural sciences from the Paris Institute of Luxury Marketing.

In 1995, at the age of 26, Kurkdjian created the fragrance "Le Male for Jean Paul Gaultier," which has been a huge success worldwide. This perfume helped Francis gain recognition and draw special attention to himself. Since then, the Franco-Armenian perfumer has created over 40 fragrances for renowned designers and fashion houses.

Engaging in the development and sale of perfume for high-ranking figures in the fashion industry from the beginning of his career, Kurkdjian discovered new ways to express his talent. This new vision allowed the perfumer to stand alongside well-known contemporary creators who excelled in their craft. Francis recreated Marie Antoinette's favorite perfumes for the Palace of Versailles, taking a unique journey to the early 17th century, to the very origins of the perfume industry.
Through Kurkdjian's efforts, unusual giant "olfactory installations" or "perfume rooms" were born. He immersed people in dreams through his ephemeral and spectacular "olfactory performances." Kurkdjian was the first to open his own perfume workshop in 2001, where customers could create their own personal fragrance. Essentially, Francis went against the trend of market democratization and mass production.
In 2006, he created a new commemorative composition for "Papier d'Arménie" ("Armenian Paper"), a perfume product intended for masking and eliminating unpleasant odors. This "incense paper" is sold in a package with twenty sheets, each of which is divided into three parts. The paper is coated with benzoin resin obtained from the sap of the styrax tree.
In 2008, the French government honored Francis as a Knight of Arts and Letters. Kurkdjian is one of the founders of the luxury fragrance house "Maison Francis Kurkdjian," which he opened with his business partner, Marc Chaya, in 2009 near Place Vendôme in Paris. This brand is involved in the sale of numerous fragrances created by Francis' talent, as well as other fragrant substances and products, including leather bracelets.
Sharing the secret of creating the fragrance "Rumeur," Kurkdjian stated in 2006, "To be a perfumer means to be a bit of a magician. It's about realizing your vision of someone else's emotions. For six months, all my energy was spent on coming up with the right formula for 'Rumeur' because for me, the process of creating a fragrance is not just about blending raw materials. It's about creating a memory that will last and last."
