Biography of John Conte

John Conte was an American actor of stage, film, and television. He is known for his roles in various television productions and musicals, including those on Broadway. Many consider Conte to be one of the pioneers of American television and one of the leading stars of the small screen during his time.

Early Life and Career

Conte was born in Palmer, Massachusetts. When he was a teenager, his family moved to Los Angeles. After graduating from Lincoln High School, he started working in radio and singing in different venues. One of his most consistent jobs was on the radio show "Burns and Allen," which aired in the 1940s.

In 1947, Conte appeared in the short-lived Broadway musical "Allegro" by Rodgers and Hammerstein. He returned to Broadway in 1950 in the production of "Arms and the Girl."

Television and Film Career

Conte's television career began in the early 1950s when he portrayed Sid Caesar in "Your Show of Shows." He also hosted the show "Matinee Theater," one of the first daytime soap operas that aired on NBC.

In 1955, Conte landed his first major film role as an alcoholic in "The Man with the Golden Arm." He continued to act in films throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

KMIR-TV and Later Life

In 1968, Conte and his wife, Sirpu Filibosian Conte, launched their own channel, KMIR-TV. The station broadcasted on ultra-high frequency waves and was closely associated with the larger NBC network. Over time, KMIR-TV became the third-largest station in the entire Coachella Valley. In 1999, the Contes sold the station to Journal Communications.

Conte actively supported the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage and was one of the founders of the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, California.

Personal Life and Legacy

Conte was married three times, with the first two marriages ending in divorce and the third due to his death. He is survived by his wife, Sirpu, his son Christopher Conte, two stepdaughters Louise Danelian and Joyce Stine, and six grandchildren.

John Conte passed away at the age of 90 from natural causes at the Eisenhower Medical Center, which he had been closely associated with. At the time of his death, he was living in nearby Indian Wells. His brother-in-law, Joe Stine, announced his passing.
