Childhood and Early Career
Jack Crompton was born in Oldham, Lancashire, England. He began his football career playing for local amateur club Oldham Athletic. During World War II, he made guest appearances for Stockport County.
Manchester United Career
In 1944, Crompton signed a professional contract with Manchester United. He became the club's first-choice goalkeeper and played in the 1948 FA Cup Final. He retired as a player in 1956.
Coaching Career
After retiring, Crompton joined Manchester United's coaching staff. In 1962, he briefly managed Luton Town before returning to United. He spent 32 years in various coaching roles, including head coach in 1971-1972 and assistant manager in 1972 and 1973-1974.
Later Career and Legacy
In May 1981, Crompton served as caretaker manager of Manchester United between the departure of Dave Sexton and the appointment of Ron Atkinson. At the age of 90, he is one of the oldest living Manchester United players. He currently resides in Oldham, Greater Manchester.
