John Danforth, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, is a respected figure known for his independent views and integrity. Born in St. Louis on September 5, 1936, Danforth's grandfather, William Danforth, founded the renowned pet food company Ralston Purina.
Education and Legal Career
Danforth graduated from Princeton University and Yale Law School. He served as a special prosecutor during the Clinton administration, investigating the 1993 siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Texas. He subsequently absolved FBI agents of wrongdoing.
Political Service
Danforth was a Republican Senator from Missouri for 18 years, until 1995. Known for his moderate political views and ability to bridge the aisle, he is a departure from his conservative predecessor, John Negroponte.
