Biography of John Boyd Dunlop

John Boyd Dunlop, the inventor of inflatable tires, was born on February 5, 1840, and passed away in 1921. He was originally a veterinarian and often used a bicycle to travel to his clients in rural areas. It was in 1888 that he patented the invention of inflatable tires.

In 1896, Dunlop registered a company to manufacture his tires called Byrne Brothers India Rubber Company. In 1900, he changed its name to Dunlop Rubber Company. Six years later, his company started producing tires for automobiles. Dunlop was dedicated to ensuring the high quality of his products, so he believed it was necessary to control the entire tire manufacturing process, starting from the proper technology for rubber collection. As a result, his company became the largest owner of rubber plantations in Malaya.

By the time of Dunlop's death, his company had become one of the largest in Britain.
