John Edward Hopcroft is an American scientist in the field of theoretical computer systems and a Turing Award laureate.

Education and Career

Hopcroft received his bachelor's degree from the University of Seattle in 1961. He then went on to pursue his master's degree (1962) and doctorate in philosophy (1964) at Stanford University. After working as an associate professor at Princeton University for three years, Hopcroft joined Cornell University in 1972, where he holds a full professorship in applied mathematics and computer science. He has received named scholarships, including the Joseph C. Ford Professor and Joseph Silbert Dean. Currently, he is an IBM Professor.

Research and Contributions

Hopcroft's research focuses on theoretical aspects of computer science, particularly the analysis of algorithms, automata theory, and graph theory. He is a co-author of several books on formal languages and finite automata. In 1973, Hopcroft and Richard Karp developed an algorithm for finding maximum matchings in bipartite graphs, which operates in time. Additionally, Robert Tarjan and John Hopcroft developed an algorithm for determining the orientation of edges in an undirected graph to create a strongly connected graph. Both algorithms were named after their inventors. In 1986, Hopcroft and Tarjan were awarded the Turing Award for their "fundamental contributions to the development and analysis of algorithms and data structures."
