Early Success and Works

Steinbeck's first major success came with the publication of "Tortilla Flat" in 1935, a humorous exploration of the lives of farmers in Monterey. His early naturalistic works were well-received by critics. Steinbeck also wrote screenplays, including "Viva Zapata!" in 1952. One of his most famous short works is the fable "The Pearl".

Notable Works

"In Dubious Battle" (1936), "Of Mice and Men" (1937), and "The Grapes of Wrath" (1939), which won the Pulitzer Prize and was adapted into a film in 1940, depict rural life in his native California, where displaced families from Oklahoma sought a better life.
