John Evans Jones: Nevada's Eighth Governor

Early Life and Career

John Evans Jones was born in Montgomeryshire, Wales. In 1856, his family immigrated to Iowa, where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in Eureka, Nevada from 1869. He later ventured into mining and agriculture until 1883, when he was appointed Nevada's Surveyor General.

Political Career

After serving two terms as Surveyor General, Jones was elected governor of Nevada on the Silver Party ticket. As governor, he supported silver mining interests and advocated for the free coinage of silver.

Death and Legacy

John Evans Jones passed away in office on April 10, 1896, at the age of 62. His brief tenure as governor was marked by his support for the silver industry and his commitment to serving the people of Nevada.
