John Evans Jones: Nevada's Eighth Governor
Early Life and CareerJohn Evans Jones was born in Montgomeryshire, Wales. In 1856, his family immigrated to Iowa, where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in Eureka, Nevada from 1869. He later ventured into mining and agriculture until 1883, when he was appointed Nevada's Surveyor General.
Political Career
After serving two terms as Surveyor General, Jones was elected governor of Nevada on the Silver Party ticket. As governor, he supported silver mining interests and advocated for the free coinage of silver.
